Torino Film Festival Unveils 120-Title 44th Edition Lineup
Giulio Base's gender-balanced committee chose the lineup, which includes competition entries starring Renate Reinsve, Golshifteh Farahani and Alicia Vikander.
The 44th Torino Film Festival has announced a lineup of 120 titles across six sections, according to Variety. Artistic director Giulio Base assembled a gender-balanced selection committee that reviewed more than 5,000 submissions.
Ten of the 16 films in the feature competition are directed by women, and the short-film selection has the same proportion of women directors. The feature competition jury is chaired by Francesca Archibugi, Stefania Casini heads the documentary jury and Chiara Francini heads the shorts jury.
Competition titles include Itonje Søimer Guttormsen's Butterfly, starring Renate Reinsve; Chabname Zariab's When She Hears the Bells, starring Golshifteh Farahani; and Rachel Rose's The Last Day, starring Alicia Vikander and Wagner Moura.
The selection also includes Thirteen in Gaza by Palestinian filmmaker Hosam Abu Da and Milcho Manchevski's Good People. A Marilyn Monroe retrospective, introduced by an all-female roster of journalists and academics, is part of the programme.
Second consecutive year
The 10-of-16 figure for women directors in the competition matches the previous edition, when the same proportion of features was directed by women. The festival originally ran as the Festival Internazionale Cinema Giovani, the Festival of Young Cinema.
