Airbnb bans checkout chores for bookings from November 20
Hosts can no longer require guests to strip beds, do dishes, start laundry or remove trash, though water-saving and bear-proof bin requests remain allowed.
Airbnb has updated its policy to bar hosts from requiring guests to strip beds, wash and put away dishes, start laundry or remove trash before checkout, according to TechCrunch. The rule applies to reservations made on or after November 20.
Hosts may still ask guests to conserve water during droughts and to use bear-proof trash containers in areas where wildlife poses a risk, the company said.
Some hosts pushed back on the update in Airbnb's community forums, arguing that basic cleaning responsibilities are needed for sanitation. One host said they might withdraw their listing.
The change follows earlier moves on pricing. In May 2025, Airbnb began displaying total prices, including fees but excluding taxes, by default in search results worldwide.
In 2024, the platform faced scrutiny over price transparency after hosts added cleaning fees after booking, and in 2023 the company said more than 260,000 hosts had reduced or eliminated their cleaning fees.
