GE-Proton 11-9 and 11-8 Released for SteamOS and Linux

The update fixes a Crimson Desert hang, adds automatic HDR detection for DX11 and DX12, and corrects a Wayland HDR regression.

GE-Proton 11-9 and GE-Proton 11-8 have been released, bringing improvements for running Windows games on SteamOS and Linux, according to gamingonlinux.com. The updates were published together with a fix list covering video playback, Wayland handling, controllers and other components.

In GE-Proton 11-9, the lead fix addresses Crimson Desert getting stuck after selecting Play or starting a new game, a problem caused by looping menu-video playback and affecting both Wine-Wayland and XWayland. The release also adds automatic HDR detection for DX11 through DXVK and DX12 through VKD3D-Proton when using Wine-Wayland or Gamescope, removing the need for the PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 and PROTON_USE_HDR=1 variables.

The same version corrects a Wine-Wayland detection regression that incorrectly reported HDR displays as SDR, an issue that affected Dragon's Dogma 2 and other games. SDR fallback is preserved when HDR is unavailable or disabled, and legacy HDR overrides remain, with DXVK_NO_HDR=1 available to disable HDR reporting. The README was also updated with automatic HDR setup instructions.

GE-Proton 11-8, released alongside it, refreshes Wine bleeding-edge, DXVK, VKD3D-Proton, VKD3D, D7VK, DXVK-NVAPI, DXVK-IGDext, FEX, lsteamclient, wineopenxr and protonfixes. It also rebases the downstream patch stack and removes patches that have been superseded upstream.

Background

GE-Proton is maintained by GloriousEggroll, who has discussed the tool on X. The newer Epic Games Launcher uses GE-Proton to run Windows games on Linux.

Quick answers

What does GE-Proton 11-9 fix in Crimson Desert?

It fixes the game getting stuck after selecting Play or starting a new game, which was caused by looping menu-video playback and affected both Wine-Wayland and XWayland.

Do I still need PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 or PROTON_USE_HDR=1?

No. GE-Proton 11-9 adds automatic HDR detection for DX11/DXVK and DX12/VKD3D-Proton with Wine-Wayland or Gamescope, so those variables are no longer required. Legacy HDR overrides are still retained.

How do I turn HDR reporting off in GE-Proton 11-9?

Setting DXVK_NO_HDR=1 disables HDR reporting.
