Marissa Mayer launches Dazzle, an AI agent that reads your camera roll

The former Yahoo CEO says Dazzle scans smartphone photos to answer questions, order items and build to-do lists, aiming at non-technical users.

Marissa Mayer has launched Dazzle, a personal AI agent that analyzes the photos in a smartphone camera roll to answer questions, complete tasks and make suggestions.

According to The New York Times, which reported on the competitive landscape around the product, Dazzle can order trousers spotted in a photo, pick out birthday gifts, and automatically build a to-do list called "Get it Done" alongside an activity list called "Ideas".

Mayer said she uses the assistant herself. She cited answers it gave about her daughter's strengths, a mask-making activity for a family trip to Venice, a glow-in-the-dark pool party for her son's 14th birthday and a Halloween costume idea drawn from a cake painting by Wayne Thiebaud.

She said Dazzle is aimed at people who are not tech-savvy, particularly busy women, and criticized existing AI assistants as too technical and weighed down with jargon.

The launch follows two earlier Mayer apps that drew little response: the contact-management app Sunshine Contacts and the photo-sharing app Shine, both of which were discontinued.

Mayer joined Google in 1999 as its 20th employee and first female engineer, leading search for a decade and overseeing Maps, News and Gmail. In 2012 she became CEO of Yahoo and stepped down in 2017; the following year she founded an AI startup incubator.
