OpenAI Tells Business Insider It Prefers 'Compute Campuses' to Data Centers
An OpenAI spokesperson said the term better describes the scale and role of the AI infrastructure the company is building.
OpenAI has adopted "compute campuses" as its preferred term for data centers, according to a spokesperson who spoke with Business Insider. Gizmodo also contacted OpenAI for confirmation of the rebrand.
The spokesperson told Business Insider that the phrase better describes the scale and role of the AI infrastructure being built. The infrastructure, the spokesperson said, represents long-term investments in computing, energy infrastructure and skilled work.
OpenAI also said it wants the communities that host the infrastructure to help shape it and share in the opportunities it creates.
Discussion of how the technology is described has surfaced elsewhere this year. In September, President Donald Trump backed the term "Super Intelligence" in place of "artificial intelligence" and directed federal officers under his authority to use it.
Public opinion data from the summer offered context on AI's standing. A Pew survey over the summer found that only 16% of Americans had a positive view of AI's future role in society, while a September Pew survey found that only 4% of Americans thought data centers impacted the environment, utility costs, neighborhood quality of life, jobs and tax revenue all positively.
