OpenAI offers 20-40% discounts to win enterprise customers from Anthropic

The Information reports that Rippling and Replit are among customers shifting model spending to OpenAI, which is also adding free credits and support.

OpenAI is offering enterprise customers model discounts of 20-30%, with some offered up to 40%, plus free credits and technical support, in a push to win spending away from Anthropic, according to The Information.

At Rippling, Anthropic models handled 57% of engineers' coding work in May while OpenAI models handled 16%. OpenAI now accounts for 52% and Anthropic 18%. Rippling CEO Parker Conrad said the company chose the cheaper OpenAI models to cut costs.

Replit moved most of its AI spending from Anthropic to OpenAI in recent months. OpenAI included a discount of more than 30% in a contract worth over $100 million a year, according to a person familiar with the matter. Replit had planned to continue with Anthropic but chose OpenAI after Anthropic required a higher spending commitment to extend existing discounts. Switching models took a few hours of code changes and a few days to apply to its product, Replit said.

DataCamp CEO Jonathan Cornelissen said the company was offered a 40% discount on models used in internal product development, on condition it uses Codex instead of rival tools such as Claude Code or OpenCode. DataCamp is negotiating to apply the same discount to OpenAI models used in the applications it sells to customers. Cornelissen expects the combined base price differences and discounts to cut total costs by 80-90%, a figure he describes as the expected saving from switching models rather than the discount rate itself.

The usage race on OpenRouter

OpenAI overtook Anthropic about a month ago as the most-used model provider on OpenRouter, but Anthropic retook the lead after launching Claude Opus 5.5 late last month. Over the past week, usage of Anthropic models on OpenRouter was about twice that of OpenAI models.

Anthropic has offered discounts to large customers but has stopped applying them once contractual usage limits are reached. During the summer of 2026, cost-sensitive companies tried to cut Anthropic spending and move to other tools, according to Conrad, and Anthropic has maintained higher profitability than OpenAI, according to The Information.
