Tesla Roadster climbs wall, jumps cars in Texas demo
Tesla's next-generation Roadster used underbody fans and cold-gas thrusters at an October 15 event, hitting 60 mph in under one second without a driver.
Tesla publicly demonstrated its next-generation Roadster in Texas on October 15, 2026, driving the car up a curved wall, suspending it upside down from the ceiling and landing it after a jump, according to platum.kr. The vehicle also cleared five Tesla cars and accelerated from standstill to 60 mph in under one second with no driver aboard, controlled remotely.
The display rests on four underbody fans that consume about 80 kW and pull air from beneath the chassis, paired with skirts that block air from entering at the sides. Tesla says the suction alone can hold the car upside down from a standstill; a screen showed roughly 4,700 kg of downforce during the ramp climb. The company claims cornering above 2g, against roughly 1-1.2g for typical high-performance production sports cars.
Compressed air is stored at 10,000 psi (about 690 atm) in a carbon-fiber tank behind the seats, per Tesla's post-event briefing. The Thrust specification carries 200 liters of air and the Rocket specification 600 liters, with over 80 kN of maximum thrust, which Tesla says is 4-5 times the tires' grip. Thrust uses four rear nozzles for straight-line acceleration; Rocket adds a downward nozzle at each corner and two steerable front nozzles for lift and rotation.
Tesla reported a 0.81-second run at the live demo, against 1.0 second in a pre-recorded video, and told reporters the Rocket spec reaches 0.55 seconds on a one-foot rollout measurement. Refilling the tank currently takes 6-7 hours, with a target of 30 minutes, and Tesla estimates only a few seconds of maximum-output firing. The car can run 25-30 minutes at full power on a track and charge its 800-1,000V battery from 15% to 80% in 10 minutes; battery capacity and noise figures were not disclosed.
Sales limits and earlier fan-car experiments
The Rocket specification will be sold by invitation only and not in some regions, and Tesla's website states the car has not received road-use approval. The FAA had set a temporary flight restriction over the McGregor test site ahead of the originally planned October 1 public event.
The concept follows earlier fan-car experiments: the Chaparral 2J raced in Can-Am in 1970, and the Brabham BT46B won the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix before being withdrawn after one race. In 2022, the McMurtry Spéirling set a 39.08-second Goodwood Hillclimb record with about 2,000 kg of downforce on a roughly 1,000 kg car.
Quick answers
When did Tesla demonstrate the next-generation Roadster?
Tesla showed the car in Texas on October 15, 2026, driving it up a wall, jumping over five vehicles and completing a sub-one-second 0-60 mph run without a driver.
Can the Tesla Roadster be driven on the road?
Tesla's website states the car has not received road-use approval. The Rocket specification will be sold by invitation only and not in some regions.
How does the Roadster's suction system work?
Four underbody fans consuming about 80 kW pull air from beneath the chassis, while skirts block air from entering at the sides. Tesla says the system alone can hold the car upside down from standstill.
