Samsung, Intel, TSMC Push US Fab Buildouts as SK hynix Expands

Samsung is preparing to start operations at its Taylor, Texas fab 1 this year, while Intel has finished the main steel structure at its Ohio One site.

Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, Intel and TSMC are all moving forward with semiconductor plant construction in the United States, according to inews24.com. Samsung is preparing to begin operations at its Taylor, Texas fab 1 within this year and plans to expand 2nm process capacity in stages.

Intel said on the 21st that it completed installation of the main steel structure of the first production facility at its Ohio One site in New Albany, Ohio. The company is also installing equipment at its new Fab 62 in Arizona, which is targeted to operate at the end of 2028.

TSMC said in its earnings announcement on the 15th that it has finished construction of its Arizona fab 2 and is bringing in equipment, with 3nm mass production to start in the third quarter of 2027. SK hynix is building an HBM advanced packaging plant in West Lafayette, Indiana, with investment of more than $4 billion and mass production targeted for the third quarter of 2029.

Separately, Elon Musk said on the 20th at SpaceX's earnings presentation that the Terafab project targets mass production in the third quarter of 2028, acknowledging schedule uncertainty. Hanmi Semiconductor is reportedly discussing supplying thermal compression bonders to Terafab.

Tesla and SpaceX officials reportedly visited about 10 Korean companies, including Dongjin Semichem, ENF Technology and Unisem, at SEMICON West on the 13th to 15th to explore supply possibilities. ENF Technology is supplying semiconductor process materials to Samsung's Taylor fab from its Texas plant, and Dongjin Semichem is pursuing mass production at its Texas plant within this year.

Earlier US investment milestones

In August, SK hynix held a groundbreaking ceremony for its Indiana HBM packaging plant on August 27. Last year, Samsung signed a semiconductor supply contract worth about $16.5 billion with Tesla to produce Tesla's next-generation AI chip 'AI6' at the Taylor plant.
