Capcom Details REX Project to Evolve RE Engine for AI Generation

At Capcom Open Conference RE:2026, Capcom outlined REX, a project to rebuild RE Engine so AI can read, write and test its code.

Capcom detailed the Rex project, an effort to evolve its RE Engine into a game engine for the AI generation, at Capcom Open Conference RE:2026 on October 2, according to wccftech.com. Programmer Satoshi Ishida presented the work.

Under Rex, Capcom unified the entire system under the rules of a single common programming language. The company envisions AI that can understand RE Engine's code, write it automatically, run test plays and check for bugs on its own.

Several Rex technologies have already been open-sourced and published online, including RE:Dox and RE:Log, partly to make them useful for AI training. RE:Log records logs as compact ID numbers rather than text, looking text up only when it is displayed and gathering logs on a central server. RE:UI, a new framework for Capcom's internal development tools, separates how interface elements look from their state.

Two more components support the same goal. RE:Flows is a visual scripting tool that converts designers' gameplay logic into a standard programming language behind the scenes, while RE:Runtime automatically translates code written in a human-friendly language into RE:C++, a Capcom-specific language.

Capcom says the presentation covered only development tooling and did not touch on AI-generated art, assets or in-game content.

Engine history

Capcom started developing RE Engine in 2014, and it debuted with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard in 2017. More than 27 Capcom games released since have been built on it, and nearly all of Capcom's 2,000-plus developers now use the engine. Capcom previously revealed that the evolved engine would add support for Mesh Shaders.
