Evil Empire Details Castlevania: Belmont's Curse's Many Iterations

Evil Empire's Ben Laulan says Castlevania: Belmont's Curse was once too slow and Dark Souls-like, then too fast and Dead Cells-like, before its final form.

Evil Empire head of business Ben Laulan said Castlevania: Belmont's Curse went through many different versions during development, according to an interview with PCGamesN reported by GamesRadar+. Early builds of the game were slower, with heavier combat and what Laulan described as a Dark Souls-like vibe.

The developers ultimately decided that slower version was not really Castlevania, because it was too slow, too intense and too hard. After they increased the speed, the game swung the other way, becoming too much like Evil Empire's previous work on Dead Cells, with too little exploration. The team adjusted again before settling on the final design.

Castlevania: Belmont's Curse has released to critical acclaim, per the article. Evil Empire previously supported Motion Twin's roguelike Dead Cells post-launch.

A producer said Castlevania: Belmont's Curse was born out of a sense of urgency, and that waiting 10 years for the next game would make the whole thing meaningless.
