GTA 3 veteran recalls crashes before 25th anniversary
Obbe Vermeij says Grand Theft Auto 3 crashed often and ran badly for most of development, only reaching 30 fps in its final months.
Rockstar veteran Obbe Vermeij has published a retrospective marking 25 years of Grand Theft Auto 3, describing a project that spent most of its development in a troubled state, according to gamesradar.com. The post arrives as attention turns to Grand Theft Auto 6.
Vermeij said the game crashed frequently, ran at a bad frame rate and had holes in the map for much of production. It only came together in the last six months, he said, and only reached 30 fps in the final months.
He also said he does not remember many people working crazy hours on Grand Theft Auto 3.
The road to the game had already been disrupted: a project that would have become GTA 2.5 was cancelled in 2000 and the Dundee office closed, after which GTA 3 was officially greenlit by Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar.
The retrospective lands two and a half decades after a release that helped define the open-world format, and with Grand Theft Auto 6 still the focus of the series' audience.
