Ex-Metroid Prime engineer calls Sol Valley a pointless addition

Jack Mathews said the desert area in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond spread the development team's AI resources too thin and that the Viola misses the point of relaxed play.

Jack Mathews, former lead engineer of the original Metroid Prime trilogy, criticized the Sol Valley desert area and the Viola motorcycle in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, in an interview published on the YouTube channel KIWI TALKZ on October 30, 2026.

Mathews said Sol Valley contains only one large landmark, and that two or three dedicated AIs were developed for the area, which he argued spread resources thin. He compared the region to a Zelda dungeon combined with the Great Sea of The Wind Waker.

On the Viola, Mathews said the motorcycle-style vehicle reflects an attempt to add an element of relaxed play. He argued that this misunderstands what relaxed play means in Metroid Prime: exploration while not shooting enemies.

More broadly, Mathews said adding new elements such as Sol Valley to an entry in the series carries risks over whether the new systems are actually fun.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is currently on sale for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch.
