QSSR May Skip Older PS5 SDKs, Limiting Retrofits
Digital Foundry's Richard Leadbetter says retrofitting older PS5 games with QSSR may require an SDK update, unlike PSSR.
Richard Leadbetter of Digital Foundry said in a Q&A video that QSSR, the upscaler Sony recently introduced for the PlayStation 5, may not be available for older versions of the console's SDK, according to wccftech.com. That limitation could restrict how many older games receive the technology after release.
According to Leadbetter, retrofitting older titles with QSSR would require developers to update those games to a later SDK. He said the challenges involved in updating the SDK for older titles may limit QSSR retrofits.
By contrast, Leadbetter noted that PSSR could be added to games running on older SDKs, making it a simpler path for developers working with existing projects.
Earlier claims about QSSR retrofits
Last week, Sony revealed the Quick Spectral Super Resolution upscaler for the PlayStation 5. Daniel Craig, Principal Engineer for Graphics R&D at SIE, said at the time that retrofits will be easy and require only a bit of tuning.
