VRChat Rejects AI Labels and Filters, Drawing Steam Backlash
About 950 negative reviews were posted on October 29, the day VRChat said it would not label or filter AI-generated content.
VRChat announced on October 29 that it will not add an "AI-generated" label or a search filter that excludes AI-generated content, according to automaton-media.com. The decision prompted a wave of negative reviews on Steam and a briefly applied "Artificial Intelligence" tag on the platform's store page.
About 950 negative reviews were posted on October 29, the day of the announcement. Reviews from the past 30 days show roughly 33% positive out of about 4,000, giving VRChat a "Mostly Negative" status for that period. An "Artificial Intelligence" tag was added to the store page around 16:00 on November 1 and removed around 8:00 on November 2.
The company said it has contacted creators of worlds that do not follow the updated guidelines individually to request fixes. It also outlined planned changes to how worlds are presented: a Like/Dislike voting feature targeted for the end of 2026 or early 2027 at the latest, and multiple images instead of only a thumbnail in world listings in the first half of 2027.
Earlier Survey Pointed to Labeling Demand
On October 7, VRChat updated its creator guidelines to ban thumbnail images that differ from the actual world content and misleading descriptions, and launched a user survey titled "VRChat and AI: Where do you draw the line?" In that survey, 95% of respondents wanted some kind of labeling for content that uses AI, while 33% wanted to avoid AI-using worlds and 37% said AI is acceptable as a tool if humans do the creative work. Labeling answers split into 3,141 patterns across eight example categories, and no combination gained support from more than 10% of respondents.
