Pokémon Parody Musical BALLS Released on YouTube

The edited video was cut from more than a dozen hours of footage across 10 performances and adds hand-drawn animation and effects.

The Pokémon parody musical BALLS: The Monster-Catchin' Musical Comédy is now available to watch on YouTube, according to Kotaku. The online version was edited by the show's director and co-writer, Brandon Zelman.

Stuart Zagnit, the original English voice actor for Professor Oak, stars in the show as a Professor character. Veronica Taylor, the original English voice actress for Ash Ketchum, appears as the audience-participant "10-year-old kid" character in the YouTube version.

The digital cut was assembled from footage of 10 performances shot over six months, totaling more than a dozen hours. It adds hand-drawn animations and special effects, and redacts mentions of the monster-catching franchise by name.

The production features 151 legally distinct monsters. According to Kotaku's background on the show, the off-Broadway run lacked the budget for a full production team and was filmed with the Caveat theater's camera system plus audience cameras.

Long road to the screen

Pokémon parodies have appeared in large numbers over the last 30 years. Kotaku's writer saw BALLS in New York City and interviewed its creative leads last year.
