Film and Game Production Technologies Converge at View Conference
Industry experts in Turin discussed the blending of cinematic and gaming production techniques, from motion capture to virtual environment scouting.
Industry professionals gathered at the View Conference in Turin to discuss the increasing convergence of film and video game production technologies. The event highlighted how techniques traditionally associated with one medium are being integrated into the other to enhance creative workflows.
According to Variety, Sony Santa Monica Studio animation director Bruno Velazquez noted that the studio utilized camera technology originally developed for the production of Avatar to assist with motion capture for God of War. Meanwhile, Hal Hickel of Industrial Light & Magic revealed that the production of The Mandalorian & Grogu employed the Apple Vision Pro headset to scout digital environments.
Visual effects supervisor Tara DeMarco also addressed the intersection of these industries, explaining that the production of Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow is currently working with consultants to ensure an accurate recreation of video game aesthetics from the 1990s and 2000s.
This integration of technologies marks a shift from earlier industry practices. In the 1990s, there was a proliferation of movie-based games, though the technical synergy between the two fields was significantly more limited than it is today.
