Taobao, JD.com and Douyin deploy AI detection to fight fake refund photos

Taobao says its AI detection model reaches 95% precision and 50% recall as Chinese platforms move against buyers who fake product damage.

Chinese online shopping platforms Taobao, Tmall, JD.com and Douyin are deploying or trialing AI fake-image detection to counter buyers who use generative AI photos to claim refunds, according to zdnet.co.kr. Sellers use the tools to flag suspect images submitted as evidence that a product arrived defective.

Taobao and Tmall, both owned by Alibaba, are adding the detection capability to their seller support systems. In the chat interface of the Qianniu store operation tool, sellers can right-click a buyer's image and report it as a fraudulent refund claim.

Taobao told the Chinese newspaper Xinjing Bao that its AI automatic detection model has 95% precision and 50% recall. JD.com and Douyin, owned by ByteDance, have also begun trial operations of services that detect AI-generated fake images.

Regulator review

The Chinese government is revising the "Online Transaction Platform Rules Supervision and Management Measures" to ban platforms from forcing no-return refund responsibility onto sellers.

China's e-commerce sector runs a no-return refund scheme for low-priced goods and fresh food, which cuts return costs and time for both sellers and consumers. In two previously reported cases, a toy shop in Shanghai approved a 50-yuan refund despite unnatural outlines and inconsistent light and shadow in a buyer's photo of a soiled plush toy, while a fresh-goods shop in Hubei refunded 32 yuan of bananas without a return even though the photo matched the same background and arrangement as the seller's pre-shipment image.
