Fujibayashi: Future Zelda games should not recycle past ideas

The Zelda director and producer said he questions younger staff when an idea has already appeared in Breath of the Wild or Ocarina of Time.

Hidemaro Fujibayashi, the Zelda director and producer, said future games in the series should not simply reuse ideas already established in earlier entries such as Breath of the Wild or Ocarina of Time. His remarks were made in an interview with Polygon, reported by gamesradar.com.

Fujibayashi described Zelda as a foundation or arena in which developers can bring their own ideas to life, rather than a fixed pool of concepts to draw from.

He said he asks younger staff whether their ideas will be fun, and points out when something they propose was already done in Breath of the Wild or Ocarina of Time. The aim, he said, is to keep staff from feeling they must pull from an existing set of Zelda ideas.

Background

Fujibayashi directed Capcom's Oracle games and The Minish Cap before joining Nintendo, where he developed Skyward Sword, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. He is described as producer of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake.
