KT, Samsung cut rail connection drops by 29% in AI-RAN trial
The Gyeongbu Line field test used AI to adjust handover timing between base stations, reducing dropped connections on high-speed rail.
KT and Samsung Electronics said on November 5, 2026, that they had completed a field trial on the Gyeongbu Line of an AI-based wireless network optimization technology for high-speed rail, cutting connection drops by about 29% in the test section, according to aitimes.com.
The trial covered the stretch between Godeok-myeon in Pyeongtaek and Maesong-myeon in Hwaseong. The technology is designed to reduce communication quality degradation in high-speed mobility environments.
AI analysis of signal strength and connection failure data identified delays in switching to the next base station as a main cause of disconnections inside train cars. The two companies then adjusted the timing of handovers between base stations in the sections flagged as problematic.
KT said it is considering applying the technology to high-speed rail in practice and will continue joint AI-RAN development and verification with Samsung Electronics.
Earlier commercial-network test
In December 2025, the two companies verified AI-RAN-based user-customized optimization technology on a commercial network in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, with about 18,000 subscribers.
