LOTTE EATZ to compensate customers after Giftiel coupon outage

LOTTE EATZ announced on October 28 that it will compensate customers whose membership coupons expired unused during the shutdown of the Giftiel mobile coupon system that followed a hack, according to dailysecu.com. The dining platform operator posted a notice on its official app about membership coupon problems caused by the coupon provider's system check.

Under the measures, membership upgrade coupons and birthday coupons will have their validity extended once the coupon system is normalized. Mileage coupons will have the expired coupon amount re-credited as mileage, and stamp coupons will have their stamps re-credited.

LOTTE EATZ said it will announce details on when the extensions and restoration will take place after the coupon system is normalized.

Spoon, the Giftiel operator and a subsidiary of Daehong Communications, plans to extend the validity of unused Giftiel mobile coupons by 30 days uniformly. It aims to restore service from November 4 after completing security measures and checks.

What happened to Giftiel

On October 22 at around 7:16 PM, Spoon detected signs of a system abnormality and began an investigation. The investigation found that personal information of 18,359 customers was leaked through unauthorized external access, including names, mobile phone numbers, email addresses and refund account numbers.

Spoon blocked the attacking IP, strengthened access control, reported to the Personal Information Protection Commission and the Korea Internet & Security Agency, and requested a police investigation. Affected customers were notified individually by text message. From October 26 at 8:30 PM, Spoon suspended the Giftiel mobile coupon service for security checks and damage prevention, disrupting coupon lookup, use, approval and cancellation for 24 brands including Lotteria, Angel-in-us, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and Lotte Cinema.
